Soldier kills at least 20 people and injures others in Thailand shooting rampage
WARNING: Some viewers might find the following content distressing.
“Many” people have reportedly been killed and injured after a Thai soldier opened fire in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima (or Korat), north-east of Bangkok.
Local media is currently reporting that 20 people have been killed and that the suspect, Jakraphanth Thomma (reportedly visible above via CCTV footage), remains at large.
According to the BBC, junior officer Thomma allegedly “attacked his commanding officer before stealing a gun and ammunition from a military camp.” He then moved on to a Buddhist temple and a shopping centre north east of Bangkok and opened fire at both locations.
The BBC report that local media footage showed the suspect getting out of a Humvee-type vehicle in front of the Terminal 21 shopping centre and firing shots as people fled the scene.
Some reports are saying that the suspect is now hiding out in the basement of the Nakhon Ratchasima shopping centre, although this has not been confirmed. All we know for sure at this stage is that the suspect is still at large.
Authorities have reportedly sealed off the shopping centre to locate him as quickly as possible.
The suspects motives for the attack remain unclear.
