It’s been confirmed that the BBC is to make a drama series about Jimmy Savile’s life and the ensuing scandal, called ‘The Reckoning’.
Nobody knows who will be playing the lead role of Savile, but the mini-series will be shown on BBC One.
‘The Reckoning’ is expected to tell the story of the Savile’s rise to fame and the sexual abuse scandal that emerged after his death.
Jeff Pope is an Executive Producer and said it was “a story that has to be told. We must understand why a man like Jimmy Savile seemed to remain immune for so long to proper scrutiny and criminal investigation.”
Piers Wenger is the BBC drama controller and says that they do “not intend to sensationalise these crimes” but “to give voice to his victims. We will work with survivors to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect and to examine the institutions which Jimmy Savile was associated with and the circumstances in which these crimes took place.”
He continued: “Drama has the ability to tackle sensitive real life subjects and consider the impact of a crime on its survivors and what lessons can be learnt to stop this ever happening again.”
Neil McKay will be writing The Reckoning, and he was also the writer for the award-winning drama about Fred West, Appropriate Adult.
He also worked on the drama Moorside with Jeff Pope, about the disappearance of Shannon Matthews.
