Today is the Queen’s 95th birthday.
As it comes in this wake of the death of her beloved husband, Prince Philip, the celebrations are understandably muted.
Her Majesty has however released a birthday message.
She has thanked the country for the ‘support and kindness’ following the death of the Duke Of Edinburgh.
He passed away earlier this month, at the age of 99. The Queen is still in a period of royal mourning.
There will be no traditional gun salutes or birthday photo due to this.
Her message reads as follows: ‘I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.
‘While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.
‘My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.’
A solo picture of the Queen has been released on social media to mark her birthday.
The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, also began his appearance in the Commons from Prime Minister’s Questions by wishing the Queen a happy birthday.
An official statement was released by him this morning. Johnson says he is ‘proud to serve as her Prime Minister.’
It is expected that the Queen will see family members and walk her dogs today. Prince Charles is at his Welsh home and Prince William is not expected to visit.
Meanwhile, many had been speculating that Prince Harry might have remained in the UK to celebrate his grandmother’s birthday. He flew back to England from LA for the funeral of the Duke Of Edinburgh.
He was said to have purchased an open return flight. This caused royal experts to assume he would stay here for this difficult birthday.
However, it’s been reported by the DailyMail that he flew home yesterday.
He had one meeting with Prince Charles and William after the funeral. It was hoped that they would reunite and put an end to the family feuding that has happened since the controversial Oprah interview.
Harry has returned home to his wife Meghan Markle, who is heavily pregnant with their second child. She could not fly to England to attend the funeral, as she is expecting a baby girl in the summer.
