I’m yet to chat to one person this week who hasn’t binged or is binging The Witcher on Netflix.
Even the celebs are all over it. Anne Rice is all of my gays this week:
What a man.
The Witcher Season 1 hasn’t even been on Netflix a week yet, and already the internet is rife with rumours and fan theories about Season 2. I’ll be good with spoilers in this article, but what I will say is if, like me, you’ve already binged all eight episodes from Season 1, then you’ll TOTALLY understand the online buzz and the thirst for more.
Luckily, fans have been gifted with showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich. The head cheese behind Netflix’s new hit has absolutely zero problems teasing the sh*t out of fans with cryptic messages on social media and giving juicy interviews. The behaviour’s been giving me JK Rowling vibes lately, tbh – but less contentious. All in all, Hissrich is a tea spiller and that works for me as a fan and a journalist.
This week, she’s been talking about the yet-to-be-filmed Season 2, as us fans are the most impatient of creatures and have been demanding answers. Hissrich has already revealed some of her narrative plans for Season 2, as well as confirming that filming is likely to begin next Spring.
Over Christmas, the internet raised a confused eyebrow as Witcher fans managed to get Mark Hamill’s name trending online. It turns out that fans are hoping Hissrich and the other Witcher big dogs will cast Luke f*cking Skywalker as Vesemir, an experienced Witcher and father figure to Geralt (Henry Cavill) in the book series and games.
The suggestion actually stems back to March 2018, when classic Hissrich was stirring the fan pot once again talking about Witcher characters on Twitter.
In the tweet, Hissirch teased… sorry, wrote:
One eager fan then suggested that Star Wars’s Mark Hamill would be perfect the role.
To which Mark Hamill himself responded with the following mic drop:
“I have no idea what this is or what it’s about but agree it could/should be played by me.”
What a lad.
The official Twitter page for The Witcher games simply responded with the image below. Just swap a lightsaber for a sword and nick one of Henry’s wigs and Bob’s your uncle – well, Mark’s your Vesemir.
Bear in mind this Twitter bants took place in March 2018, months and months before the first season of The Witcher dropped on Netflix. Thanks to the world contracting Witcher fever this week, the 2018 tweets have resurfaced. Now, some fans are calling on producers to actually cast Mark Hamill as Vesemir in Season 2.
I’m so here for it.
Here’s Netflix’s official show synopsis:
“The Witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.”
To be fair, Hamill could probably bring his own costumes with him from his Star Wars days. He probably has a ton of ratty robes, cloaks and leather lying around.
Make it happen, Lauren.
