Ask any 30-something about The Witches and they’ll shudder at the memory of The Grand High Witch, and you can find out if Anne Hathaway manages to terrify just as much as the remake is out today.
The original came out in 1990 and was based on the 1983 tale by Roald Dahl, where the attendees of a very strange conference transform children into rodents.
Anjelica Huston played the iconic role of The Grand High Witch in the original, and playing Eva Ernst this time is Anne Hathaway. The jet-black bob has gone and now she’s a glamorous blonde, but don’t let the image fool you. They’re still as loathsome as ever.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who is best known for the Back to the Future trilogy and Forrest Gump, he doesn’t appear to have veered from the original too much. Eva and her followers “turn brats into rats” and have one aim only: to rid the world of children.
To casual onlookers, the Witches all seem incredibly beautiful, but it’s all make-up and wigs and they’re haggard and wizened underneath.
Completing the cast is newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer. It also stars Kristen Chenoweth and Stanley Tucci.
The Witches is available as a 48 hour rental from today (Monday, October 26) for £15.99 via Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platforms. This includes Amazon, iTunes and the Google Play store.
