Never mind arguing over who is going to be the next James Bond, all eyes are now on who is going to be the next Willy Wonka.
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory has long been a classic, and it raised eyebrows when Johnny Depp was cast as Willy Wonka in the remake.
Warner Bros. is now making a Willy Wonka prequel, set for release in 2023. Tom Holland and Timothee Chalamet are reportedly being eyed up for the role.
Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp took on the role in the 1971 and 2005 films. This prequel, however, will be an origin story for Willy Wonka himself.
According to Collider, sources say both Call Me By Your Name star Timothee and Spider-Man actor Tom are competing for the role.
Timothee is known for his quirkiness, which would suit the character. But, Tom Holland is certainly versatile especially when it comes to dancing as well (just ask anyone who’s seen his Lip Sync Battle as Rihanna.)
Paul King is set to direct the movie, having previously worked on Paddington. Harry Potter’s David Heyman will be producing.
Gene Wilder was the first to play Wonka onscreen. He performed alongside child actor Peter Ostrum in the 1971 musical.
Tim Burton then directed the remake, which of course had to feature Johnny Depp. They modernised the songs and made it even more colourful, and dare we say it – weirder. That’s all par for the course with Tim Burton though.
Both Timothee and Tom have jam-packed schedules at the moment though.
Timothee will be working on the Call Me By Your Name sequel, as well as comedy Don’t Look Up, and Dune is set for release later this year. Tom will be working on the third Spider-Man instalment, which has fans very excited.
Maybe they should just cast this guy instead, who clocks up millions of views for posting odd videos dressed as Willy Wonka on TikTok.
The Next James Bond
The battle for who will be the next James Bond is still raging. Betting odds have been slashed for Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, who is a favourite alongside Tom Hardy. Ladbrokes cut the odds of Murphy replacing Craig from 16/1 to 10/1.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Cillian Murphy could soon be swapping tweed for tuxedos with his odds of playing Bond being slashed drastically in the past 24 hours.”
Hardy is still in the lead though, with his odds now 2/1.
