In early January, screenshots of messages allegedly from Armie Hammer disturbed the public, and now an accusation of rape has been made against the actor.
Armie Hammer rose to Hollywood stardom through films like Call Me By Your Name and The Social Network. However, this year has seen the actor making headlines for unsettling reasons. Screenshots of Armie Hammer’s alleged interactions with multiple women revealed a violent and cannibalistic side to his sexual relations. Many were concerned about the non-consensual nature of the messages, and a woman has now stepped forward to accuse Hammer of rape.
A 24-year-old, named only as Effie, came forward at a virtual news conference on Thursday and detailed how they met in 2016. According to Effie, the pair had an instant connection, despite Hammer being married at the time, but things turned dark as the relationship progressed.
Supported by high-profile women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred, Effie stated that they, “fell in love with him instantly” but as the relationship continued Hammer used “manipulation tactics in order to exert control over me.” Eventually, she claimed that to test her “devotion” he began “removing and crossing my boundaries as he became increasingly more violent”.
The alleged rape happened on 24 April 2017 where Effie claims “Armie Hammer raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall, bruising my face. During those four hours, I tried to get away and he wouldn’t let me. I thought that he was going to kill me. He then left with no concern for my wellbeing. I was completely in shock and I couldn’t believe that someone I loved did that to me.”
The woman has accused the actor of abusing her “mentally, emotionally and sexually”.
In response, Hammer’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, has made a statement to the BBC that denies the charges. The lawyer insisted that Hammers interactions with women had been “completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory.” Brettler went on to make scathing comments about the accuser stating, “[Her] attention-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.”
Naturally, legal proceedings will have to begin before a clearer picture of what happened comes to light. At the moment, Hammer is firmly denying his part in the messages or this incident. Nonetheless, the actor has dropped out of filming Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez to address the claims.
On the back of the allegations, Hammer’s ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers has stated that they support “any victim of assault or abuse.”
Many will be concerned with the nature of these allegations.
