What a world we’re living in, when people will pretend to be part of a fictional government unit called the Freedom To Breathe Agency, and threaten retail workers with arrest if they ask them to wear masks in their shops and restaurants, etc…
While most of the world have their wits about them and see no harm in wearing a face mask during this global health crisis (other than weird tan-lines), an awful lot of people are being just that; an awful lot of people, and refusing to keep themselves and their fellow citizens safe by covering up.
It’s not a big ask and it’s been widely proven that wearing a mask does nothing in regards to inhibiting one’s breathing functions, but nonetheless, the Department of Justice in the US has had to start warning people of a fake government department calling themselves the Freedom To Breathe Agency, who essentially wonder about having a go at workers who ask them to wear masks.
It’s a bizarre and maddening concept and one that speaks to the lengths that people will go to just to be contrary and even worse when these powerless people prey on the somewhat gullible and already-stressed among us by threatening them with jail time if they persist in insisting that masks are required.
This particular video was filmed and shared to TikTok by Liz Chavez, who captioned it:
“This is what it’s like to be an essential worker. #essentialworker #covid19 #karen #helpme“
It is an infuriating video and pretty jaw-dropping that literally any grown person would behave like this to someone just trying to get on with their job.
Speaking of the incident, Chavez told Buzzfeed:
“I went up to them like, ‘Hey, in order to be inside the store you’re required to wear a mask. They told me, ‘No, we’re not required to wear a mask.’“
The woman, identified as the FTBA’s founder, Lenka Koloma, said they were “making sure that people’s constitutional rights, civil and federal laws are not broken“.
“The piece of paper they gave me was basically telling me I could go to prison for up to 3 to 5 years and I could get fined up to 10,000 dollars for telling them to wear a mask if I’m not a doctor.
“They weren’t there to shop. They honestly were probably just waiting for somebody to come up to them and ask them to wear a mask so they could do this“.
