Wherever you stand on the subject, though, there’s absolutely no defending the actions of ordinary people who see themselves as law enforcement and wave guns around as a way of imposing their will.
Jessica Richardson and her husband were taking in the great outdoors with their dog over Memorial Day weekend, when the black couple were approached by an elderly white woman brandishing a gun at the Okibbeha County Lake Kampgrounds of America (KOA) in Starkville, Mississippi.
The manager asked the couple to leave when she discovered they didn’t have a reservation, however Richardson were told at reception that they didn’t need one.
Richardson posted the video from their encounter on Facebook, where the older woman can be seen approaching the couple with a gun in her hand after arriving in her truck.
Jessica can be heard saying:
‘This lady just pulled a gun because we out here and don’t have reservations.
The only thing you had to tell us was to leave, we would have left. You didn’t have to pull a gun.”
The woman responded:
“Well I’m just telling you, you need to leave because it’s under private ownership.
You can’t be out here.”
She can then be seen holding the gun before putting it away as the situation cools.
Jessica told her Facebook followers that racism was alive and well, while writing:
‘Today was a beautiful day so my husband (who’s a vet), our 2 year old dog, and myself, decided to Google a lake to visit and have a picnic. We found a lake located in Starkville and decided to visit.
Not five mins later a truck pulls up and a white lady screams at us, she then jumps out of her truck with a gun… and proceeded to point it at the 3 of us, simply because we didn’t make reservations.
After leaving, my husband stopped by the office and talked with her husband (they’re the property managers). The husband tells my husband that reservations aren’t needed for the lake.’
“You should be serving jail time for pulling a weapon and threatening the lives of innocent people!” one user commented.
“This the old gunslinger racist that likes to pull guns on black people trying to have picnics!!!” another user wrote.
As per Mail Online, Kampgrounds of America later confirmed they had investigated the incident and fired the employee.
In a statement, they said:
‘KOA Inc. is aware of the situation that occurred Sunday, May 26th at the KOA franchise in Starkville, Mississippi.
KOA is currently looking into the matter and reaching out to all of the parties involved.’
Moral of the story here: if you value your job, don’t go around sticking a gun in innocent people’s faces.
I’ve never put a gun in someone’s face and look at me – got a job.
It’s simple really.

Charismatic, witty, charming, engaging - four things Joshua Rogers will never be. Thankfully, he’s a semi-competent writer, who, after graduating university with two mostly pointless degrees, joined The Hook two years ago. He subsequently honed his writing skills over the course of several sex-related articles, bringing a very public shame to his family's good name.
