Are you a sore loser, or do you know one? 9 in 10 Brits say they have a sore loser in their family, and as Christmas approaches, it’s a classic time for someone to rage quit and flip a board game over in frustration.
Monopoly have updated the classic family game with a new Sore Loser edition, and it’s perfect for those in your life who like to throw a wobbler.
It has a new twist – instead of the usual gameplan of buying the best slots on the board and charging extortionate rents, this Sore Loser version means you win by losing.
Players can earn money by doing things such as going to jail, going bankrupt or paying taxes, and you earn Sore Loser coins.
When you’ve collected four of those Sore Loser coins, you can cash them in for the Mr Monopoly token which allows the player to “stomp” around the board collecting money instead of paying rent.
That sounds like fun.
Monopoly say about the game: “Oh, the thrill of revenge! With this hilarious edition of the Monopoly board game, the annoying things like paying rent or going to Jail actually help players get ahead. Those who really start sinking can make a comeback using the large Mr. Monopoly token that gives players advantages over everyone else.”
They continue: “We’ve all been there and felt the pain, but now it’s actually fun! Chance cards and Community Chest cards create and celebrate sore losers.”
A poll of 2,000 people found one in four people have been playing more boardgames this year, thanks to lockdown, and 51% of people admit to sulking when they lose.
It seems we’re a nation of sore losers, as 28% of Brits admit they stop playing a game half way through if they’re losing, whilst 14% confessed they’ve even gone as far as to flip the board.
Monopoly has also launched a Sore Losers Small Claims Fund, offering the chance for sore losers to apply for cash reimbursement for any previous Monopoly misdemeanours.
To apply, simply text SORE LOSER to 80800 and follow the simple instructions for your chance to claim.
All successful applicants will receive a £20 cheque and a copy of the new MONOPOLY For Sore Losers game to avoid any future fall-outs. You can make a claim if you’ve exhibited or been privy to one of the following five behaviours: false accusations, meltdown tantrums (foot stamping, sulking, shouting “it’s not fair!”), unsporting behaviour, bending the rules or damaging the game.
Are you guilty of this?
