The iconic Machu Picchu train line, a vital artery connecting the ancient Incan citadel to the outside world, recently faced disruption due to protests. This disruption raised concerns about access to one of the world's most renowned historical sites. However, a breakthrough occurred as protesters' agreement revives Machu Picchu train line for tourists.
Machu Picchu, nestled in the Peruvian Andes, stands as a symbol of ancient Incan civilization and attracts millions of visitors annually. The train line serves as a lifeline, providing the primary access route for tourists seeking to explore the breathtaking archaeological marvel.
The train route to Machu Picchu has been reopened by Peruvian authorities following the conclusion of over a week-long demonstrations that had obstructed entry to the renowned Incan site and left tourists stuck.
The administration gave in and ended the contract that the local tourism industry was questioning eleven days after the government announced the change in the ticketing system, which had been under the control of a state corporation for fifteen years.
After meeting with the mayor of the Machu Picchu district and the regional president of Cusco, Peru's Minister of Culture Leslie Urteaga finally granted the protestors' request. Urteaga had claimed anomalies and a loss of $1.8 million for tickets that were not reported by official offices.
The authorities terminated the agreement with Joinnus, the virtual ticket sales company owned by one of the wealthiest economic groups in Peru, which had taken over the service in mid-January, and pledged to shifting ticket sales to an online platform run by the national government.
In a statement, PeruRail said that a limited service had resumed on Wednesday and that a regular service between Cusco and Aguas Calientes, a town close to the historic site, would resume on Thursday.
Walking on rail tracks are people wearing raincoats and rain ponchos holding umbrellas and a banner. Hundreds of tourists were prevented from visiting the historic sites located high in the Andes due to demonstrations that started late last week over a new centralized ticketing system.
The new electronic ticket sales platform, which transfers ticket management to a single private corporation approved by the ministry of culture, has angered local businesses, according to protesters.
The most popular tourist destination in Peru was practically deserted due to the blockade, leaving streets, hotels, and restaurants empty.
Roger Monzón, a worker at the Inkas Land hotel in the Machu Picchu neighborhood, said:
This seems like the time of the Covid-19 pandemic - you hardly see any people.- Roger Monzón
Currently, the 18-room establishment is home to just two Portuguese visitors.
Now, Protesters' agreement revives Machu Picchu train line for tourists. There will be a transition phase to the new platform, according to the agreement that the two parties signed on Wednesday.
Leslie Urteaga, Peru's minister of culture, stated to a local radio station:
We have to move forward to reactivate our economy.- Leslie Urteaga
Authorities are looking for new ways to manage tourist numbers as visitation picks up after the Covid outbreak. Agencies in charge of maintaining the Unesco World Heritage Site have issued warnings about crowding and oversale of tickets.
Protesters' agreement revives Machu Picchu train line for tourists. The reopening of the Machu Picchu train line serves as a testament to the delicate balance required in managing tourist access to culturally significant sites.
The protests underscore the importance of inclusive and sustainable practices, urging stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue to ensure the long-term preservation of heritage while fostering economic opportunities for local communities.
As Machu Picchu welcomes visitors once again, the incident highlights the ongoing journey towards a harmonious coexistence between tourism, conservation, and community welfare in this sacred corner of the world.
