The whale, found 50 feet below the surface of the ocean, is the subject of several theories as to how it got there. The best theory available to experts is that the creature was flung by strong waves up into the forests and out of the water.
However, a group of experts went to the scene to attempt and determine how the sad whale passed away in order to try and properly comprehend what happened.
The whale's age was determined by the specialists to be a 12-month-old calf while it was there, but they were unable to determine how it had died.
The group, which was dispatched by the nonprofit organization Bicho D'Agua Institute, made the suggestion on Facebook that the animal might have become entangled in the mangroves after being thrown onto the island. In the meantime, the publication Maritime Herald speculated that the whale might have perished from consuming marine garbage.
Local media was informed by Dirlene Silva of SEMMA, the Brazilian department of environmental, health, and sanitation:
“„We only found the whale because of the presence of scavenging birds of prey. The vultures were spotted circling above the carcass which was found hidden in the bush some distance from the sea.- Dirlene Silva
Bicho D'Agua's president and marine specialist Renata Emin said:
“„We're still not sure how it landed here, but we're guessing that the creature was floating close to the shore and the tide, which has been pretty considerable over the past few days, picked it up and threw it inland, into the mangrove. Along with this astonishing feat, we are baffled as to what a humpback whale is doing on the north coast of Brazil during February because this is a very unusual occurrence.- Renata Emin
The fact that whales often visit the Bahia region between August and November confused the researchers even more. After that, they move up to Antarctica.
Emin continued: "Humpback whales don't usually travel to the north. We have a record of one appearing in the area three years ago, but it's rare.
"We believe this is a calf which may have been travelling with its mother and probably got lost or separated during the migratory cycle between the two continents."
