The world of YouTube has long been a platform where individuals share their lives, interests, and experiences. However, it can also be a space where personal well-being and health are put under a microscope, as demonstrated by the case of YouTuber Eugenia Cooney.
In recent times, cops flooded with calls over Youtuber Eugenia Cooney’s appearance. This deep dive explores the situation, its implications, and the broader issues it raises.
Due to her skinny appearance, influencer Eugenia Cooney has drawn a lot of calls and emails from concerned citizens who want to know how she's doing. Recent dancing videos of Cooney have gone viral on TikTok, where users have commented more on her body than on her dancing skills.

Eugenia Cooney YouTube Appearance

It is never appropriate to make physical remarks about another person, but what happens when someone appears to have faded away for years in front of the entire world?
This is the conundrum that curious onlookers and admirers have encountered when viewing YouTuber Eugenia Cooney, who has a notorious past of inciting controversy because of her startlingly small stature.
It looks like the problem might have reached a new, serious level just now.
In 2011, the 29-year-old native of Massachusetts started live streaming on the broadcasting provider YouNow. Since then, she has amassed 2.1 million subscribers to her YouTube channel.
Although Eugenia is well-known for her gothic and emo styles, she has gained notoriety recently for wearing clothes that purposefully highlight her slender physique.
Anorexia nervosa is likely what the content author has been dealing with, though Eugenia has never formally validated this diagnosis.
People have long argued that because of her revealing videos, her content encourages harmful eating disorders in viewers, raising concerns about her influence on her teenage fans.
Many ideas on Eugenia's health, mental state, and even home life have been developed by viewers. Some claim that Deb, Eugenia's mother, is to blame for Eugenia's declining physical condition, claiming that Deb has kept Eugenia imprisoned in their home and has only been providing enough food to keep her alive.
A Change.org petition titled "Temporarily Ban Eugenia Cooney off of YouTube" was started by Eugenia's admirers in 2016 and amassed 18,000 signatures before being taken down for "violating community guidelines."
The controversial figure's online presence began to decline at the beginning of 2019, which alarmed her fans who thought she might have passed away.
However, in February, Eugenia told her admirers on her now-deleted Twitter account, X:
I appreciate the concern. I’m taking a break from social media and voluntarily working on this with my doctor privately. Please respect that.- Eugenia Cooney
After supposedly undergoing a medical evaluation, Eugenia apparently underwent a 5150 hold at a friend's request before starting a month-long rehabilitation program.
Section 5150 of the American Welfare and Institutions Code permits an adult undergoing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily detained for a 72-hour psychiatric hospitalization if it is determined that the individual poses a risk to others, themselves, or is gravely disabled.
Later that year, the YouTuber made a comeback in an hour-long video titled "Eugenia Cooney: The Comeback," produced by fellow content producer Shane Dawson. In it, she publicly addressed the rumors about her eating problem that had been circulating for 10 years as well as her rehabilitation process for the first time.
Eugenia quickly resumed her regular video uploads following the premiere of Shane's documentary, but she started to show indications of a relapse.
In 2021, a fresh petition was made on Change.org to limit Eugenia's YouTube channel's age or delete it completely.
The petition, which attracted 53,117 signatures, stated:
In February 2019, Eugenia was assessed by medical professionals in regards to her low body weight and put on an involuntary treatment order or a 5150 - a 72-hour psychiatric hold - for assessment of her mental and physical health.
It continued with a reference of The Return of Eugenia Cooney, noting that since the release of the documentary, Eugenia has had a "steady decline in Eugenia's physical appearance" and that she has refused to disclose which eating problem she has.
The petition noted, “Eugenia has stated that she weighs 38.8kg/84lbs at a height of 170cm tall or 5’7.”However, it went on to explain that Eugenia's low body mass index was caused by her little weight.
Additionally, it stated that "from an outside perspective it seems that Eugenia spends anywhere between 4-6 hours per day live streaming to this audience" and that "Eugenia is a prominent Twitch streamer with 100,000 followers."
The statement went on, “During these live streams she does not eat, she does not drink and she vehemently denies any form of problem. When Eugenia is confronted about her eating disorder she refers to the people doing so as ‘haters’.”
"Until Eugenia is willing to confront her eating disorder head-on, it is irresponsible and selfish to continue uploading and streaming to an audience of over 2 million viewers, most of whom are young and impressionable," the petition continued, calling for the removal of Eugenia's public platforms, specifically YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram.
Online influencers have voiced their opinions on Eugenia and her dubious content. One such influencer is dietician Abbey Sharp, who last month shared a video on TikTok in which she expressed her disappointment at the 723.8 thousand followers she had amassed.
Abbey was alluding to a TikTok video that Eugenia had shared in August, in which she was dressed like the late Mexican artist Selena. The video had received 78 million views.
The dietician, who is well-known for offering expert advice while making commentary on the dietary habits of celebrities, claimed that Eugenia has been let down by the internet community for receiving over two million likes on her video.
Abbey stated, “This is not good for vulnerable viewers and it’s definitely not good for her.”
Abbey continued by relating to Eugenia's content because she had overcome an eating disorder herself and could see how people who enjoyed these kinds of videos were simply feeding Eugenia's presumed illness.
In an effort to assist Eugenia in recovering, the dietician requested that her audience report her videos.
The situation has since become worse, as local Greenwich Police Sergeant Brent Reeves revealed to TMZ. He said that emails and calls regarding Eugenia have been coming into his department from all over the world, including from as far away as Egypt and New Zealand.

Brent stated:
We’re told the callers are looking to make sure she’s doing okay and isn’t being forced by her mom to make content and keep up her appearance.- Brent Reeves
Eugenia and the sergeant have been friends for more than ten years, and it is said that their bond is strong because they have a special code that the YouTuber uses to indicate that everything is OK in her videos.
But he'll know to ask her help if that object isn't there, according to TMZ.
Online accusations that Cooney's mother is pressuring her to maintain her appearance and produce content are refuted by Reeves, who claims the rumors are untrue.
The policeman claims that he and Cooney had been on good terms for more than ten years. She always inserts an unidentified object in her movies to reassure him that she is okay. He knows to request her assistance if he does not notice the object.
Reeves claimed that the 29-year-old has always been slender since he has known her. He says that even if she is content with her weight, they cannot make her eat more, even though she does eat.
The YouTuber apparently ate and "especially likes" chicken sandwiches, according to Reeves, who also told the site this. He also underlined that she is sound psychologically and always has a positive attitude when they speak.
She has been investigated by other organizations in the past, but the publication was informed that she has never fit the requirements to be compelled to receive assistance.
The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders(ANAD) estimates that at least 9% of people globally suffer from eating disorders.
Furthermore, eating disorders are among the worst mental illnesses, second only to opioid addiction, although less than 6% of those who suffer from them are officially labeled as "underweight."
An eating disorder is directly responsible for 10,200 deaths annually, or one death every 52 minutes.

The Thin Line - Privacy And Public Concern

Eugenia's case highlights the often delicate balance between personal privacy and public concern. While her audience was undoubtedly motivated by genuine care, the incident raises questions about the ethical considerations of such actions. When should fans or concerned individuals intervene in someone's life, especially in a digital space, and when should they respect personal boundaries?

The Responsibility Of Online Platforms

Online platforms like YouTube play a significant role in shaping and influencing the lives of content creators and their audiences. The incident with Eugenia Cooney sheds light on the responsibility of these platforms to address concerns about the well-being of their creators. It also underscores the need for clearer guidelines and protocols to address situations where creators may be at risk.

The Impact Of Social Media On Mental Health

The influence of social media platforms on mental health is a topic of ongoing debate. Eugenia's situation raises broader questions about the impact of digital spaces on individuals, particularly those who have built their lives and careers on the Internet. It brings to light the importance of supporting the mental and emotional well-being of content creators.

Awareness And Support

While Eugenia's situation has been fraught with controversy, it has also generated a broader conversation about eating disorders, body image, and mental health. It serves as a reminder that awareness and support for those facing such challenges are essential. It also highlights the potential for online communities to offer solace and a sense of belonging to those who are struggling.

The Road Ahead

It is a reminder that the digital age has reshaped the boundaries of public and private life, and it calls for thoughtful and empathetic responses from both creators and their audiences.

Eating Disorders And Body Image On Social Media

Social media has become a powerful platform for self-expression and communication, but it has also brought to the forefront significant concerns related to body image and eating disorders. The constant exposure to carefully curated images and lifestyles on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has created an environment where body image issues can thrive.
One of the key issues is the glorification of unrealistic beauty standards. Influencers and celebritiesoften promote edited and filtered images that showcase idealized bodies, setting unattainable benchmarks for their followers. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with one's own body.
Moreover, social media can inadvertently encourage unhealthy behaviors. It's not uncommon to find content that glorifies extreme dieting, extreme exercise regimens, or even eating disorders themselves. Such content can be triggering for individuals vulnerable to these issues.
On a positive note, social media has also become a platform for raising awareness about eating disorders and promoting body positivity. Many activists and organizations use these platforms to provide support, education, and resources for those affected by eating disorders.
